Reading the Noughts and Crosses book series, makes me feel so nostalgic as I read it when I was in school. These stories are written from the perspective of two different worlds of Noughts and Crosses. It features two characters; Sephy and Callum at the beginning that ends up with a mixed inherited life perspective. I recommend everyone to read the “Noughts and Crosses” book series by Malorie Blackman.
Firstly, Malorie keeps me glued on a series novel full of attention from the first series to the last, the thoughts it awakened in me are extraordinary and unique yet simple and real. I face a narration of how humanity has evolved while in on earth. In the introductory part of the story, the term “crosses” denote the Africans and Europeans are the “Noughts”.
Noughts and Crosses
The main Characters bringing the message is Sephy Hardley I noted that a “Cross” in this context is a black person the daughter of a powerful and wealthy politician Kamal Hardley and Jasmine is the mother. Sephy does not understand what exactly separates the Crosses and the Noughts, and while in school falls in love with McGregor.
I am led to a mix-up, on what distinguishes the two; the crosses and the Noughts. I am surprised how it becomes difficult for Sephy to help Callum, As I continue I am suspended by the style, I am left with questions that I cannot get answers to, what really separate the Noughts and Crosses yet I understand that humanity is one? I learn that Sephy eventually faces trouble when trying to help Callum. As for me, Sephy is a character with compassion and kindness yet with a trait of questioning societal difference and perception.
The opening scene is an interesting twist of events I am exposed to. The phase of revenge I experienced is thrilling. I saw a scene where Sephy is blamed for all the atrocities and losses that face the family. I am introduced to a scheme where Sephy receives a letter from Jack; Callum’s guard that indicated that Callum never loved her. I feel this as a total confusion Sephy faces as I read, just a stage-managed event.
However, and to my shock, things keep twisting deeper, Maggie informs Sephy that the letter is not from Callum and by the look of events, and I agree that Callum is forced to write the letter by the gang. Therefore, Jude, Callum’s brother vows to teach Sephy a lesson and make her life miserable.
In the end, Cara is so close to Jude who both falls in love with each other I noted the defect in the new growing love, Jude’s attitude towards crosses is not a good one, and violently beat Cara mercilessly. After the beating, Jude runs away with good money while I witness Cara from the severe beating by Jude ends up in the hospital and later dies on while Jude is sort after for murder charges.
I was left with dots to connect to get the evidence, Jude cannot escape from the guilt of the murder of Cara, the evidence is all over the room and several people saw him with her can be witnesses. Jude in some scene is accusing Andrew; the LM commander for Cara’s murder and leads to death by shot. As much as Sephy saves Jude, Jude plans an act of tough revenge against Sephy.
I understood that due to frustrations, Sephy hugs her daughter tightly as she sings the “Rainbow Child” song. The hug almost suffocated Callie Rose, as I question what I also question; did she want to finish Callie the daughter?
Callie Rose is the centre at the beginning of the Checkmate series; I now see why in every society a child will get the truth later when they grow up. I witness a conflicting scheme to hide the truth from Callie. As it is known from the previous series, Callum, Callie’s father was killed but Callie learns from Sephy that Callum the father died of an accident.
I would say that as a guardian, I would take care of children in the family, as Jude took Callie to the grandfather Kamal; I thought Callie is to start a new life on her own, but things took another direction Kamal disowns Callie and I was taken a notch higher in the twists and turns. Jude being a general now prepares Callie as a suicide bomber.
My sympathy is overflowed at this point. Meanwhile, Sephy started a relationship with Nathan whom I got later that Sephy is left confused since her mother develops breast cancer and Sonny, which I think, was a long time a male friend shows up sooner, I read confusion. Callie gets into deep shit; she falls in love with the brother of a former boyfriend and happens to be a “Cross”.
I thought before the end of this part that Jasmine had good intentions between Callie and Sephy, she forged a meeting for them and since they knew Jude as a crook, Jasmine sets a bomb to prevent Jude.
I realised that title of this part was very symbolic and meant a lot to the next twist of events. I found this part to be the most confusing and scary. Most things are revealed and Callie is shot but remains in a coma for a long time.
I noted the mix in which many people have been involved, including Tobey a closer friend to Callie. The Noughts gang headed by McAuley and the Crosses Gang led by Dowd. McAuley plans to kill Tobey and frames him as a traitor. Tobey is to be killed but Dan on the other hand appears and kills McAuley, and Dan escapes. Later I understand that Callie Rose and Tobey go to university to pursue Law thereafter play a role in funding a home that helps addicts of Alcohols and Drugs.
In the crossfire, I was introduced to the young generation of Callie’s half brother Troy and Libby where masked gangs kidnap them. The prediction spree I am taken in by Crossfire is the filling of the space between the previous two series. I also believe the sequence of events was sending a signal of how humanity is related in some way, Libby and Troy fall for each other and after a short period of romance, they separate.
I am astonished by the fact that Troy unravels some truth in the father’s death; the car that killed him belongs to Sonny. I believe Sonny killed Nathan so that he may get back to Sephy without her knowledge.
It is certain that Tobey’s arrest would come so that he seeks the legal services of Callie Rose in court. This is to show that the downplayed Crosses may be of help. I note many unanswered questions for the part to be unravelled in the sixth series, which I believe is coming soon.
The deep twists and secrets indicate how society has created a rift in humanity. The message in these narrative series is a depiction of the perception of different people based on colour.
From the first book, the humanity innocently forges ahead but several things come up. Denial is real in the preceding series, when Callie is disowned, just because of colour.
It is also evident that corruption and power go hand in hand. I take note of the fact that the bloodshed is for not only money but also hate and power. Noughts and Crosses book series is an amazing read that will transport you to another world.
